Why Karlsruhe, you may ask? Well, because it is there; I was looking for a halfway point to put my head down for the night between Bensheim and Strasbourg and Karly seem to be as good a place as any. It didn’t disappoint.
Heidelberg didn’t deserve a blog yesterday; I don’t know what the fuss is about that place but it didn’t do it for me. But the day ended well in Bensheim by having dinner with a young couple and their 2 kids. I asked them if they knew of a German restaurant nearby that I had heard about, not only had they not heard about it but they too were looking for somewhere to eat, so they Googled it and asked me if I care to join them, which I did. Meeting people is one of the joys of touring.
Today’s ride took me though beautiful villages, farmland, forest, Heidelberg, Bruchsal and finally to Karlsruhe where I am staying in a delight AirBnb hosted by Brigitte.
The ride whilst long was very enjoyable; everyday is different when touring on a bicycle. Today was no exception, stopped to have a chat with this lovely couple, both retired, sitting in the forest just outside of Waldorf. He was very proud to inform me in very good English that Waldorf is famous for two things; SAP (international company specialising in accounting software) who are based there and the founder of Waldorf Astoria Hotel Chain was born there before migrating to America to open the first one in New York. Moving along, dying for a chai by now, luck would have it, found a café that made a nice one in Bruchsal; a cute little town recommended by my mate, Hartwig. Took the opportunity to take a few photos there.
After a quick tour of the city, had a lovely Risotto with fungi at an Italian restaurant recommended by Brigitte. Tomorrow off to Strasbourg, I wonder what the day will bring. Its days like this that I love about touring. Happy days,
