Germany Stage 1 – Bonn to Koblenz 69km (19-Jun-2018)

Interesting town Bonn, last night visited the market place in the old town as the dwellers were packing up. Had a good look around before dining at a vegetarian restaurant. It was awesome, it’s a buffet style, hot or cold; you pay by the weight of the food. Happy days.
It was an early start, a tad fresh and an overcast sky; first stage of my German tour along the Rhine, there was not a lot to whinge about. Didn’t take me long to find the path on the right side of the Rhine to make my way to Koblenz, where the Mosel meets the Rhine. Why Koblenz, from a cyclist point of view a good overnight stop with plenty of options for accommodation and food. The ride itself was very picturesque but the overcast sky didn’t do the viewing any justice.

Stopped at a few cafes for a chai but I was out of luck; bugger. Settled for a tea instead and a sandwich at a bakery.

Moving along, came across a couple of Kiwi’s as you naturally would along the Rhine. After exchanging pleasantries, kept moving on and bumped into a German (on his bike), I met on the train in Hamburg. Small world. The last 5km to my hotel was seriously hard work, all uphill; not a lot of fun with a couple of panniers on the back of the bike. First impression of the hotel, not good but it grew on me. The room’s simplicity is quite charming, the Internet is strong and reliable, the shower is good, it’s clean and the host Jurg is something else; born to be in hospitality. What a character?  After chilling for an hour or so, went for another 16km ride to explore Koblenz.

Came across a Dutch couple that obliged to take my photo in front of the statue of Kaiser Wilhelm.
They were making their way back home to North Holland after cycling to the Swiss/Italian border. Always good to meet other tourers to exchange travelling experiences. Making my way back to the hotel, was hoping to find a Lidl or an Aldi to stock up on some sweets etc for tonight and tomorrow’s stage 2, but no luck. Never mind the dinner was excellent, mixed salad and a Schnitzel with chips; very German, I reckon. Let’s see what tomorrow brings. By the way, Ursula is doing just fine in Zurich.
