Denmark Stage 5 - Aarhus to Horsens 66km (13-Jun-2018)

What can go wrong on a day like this? Once again, a clear blue sky, a little fresh in the morning. I was happy to be back on the saddle. I was quickly out of Aarhus’ core and then spent the next 20 minutes escaping the suburban sprawl if you can call it that. But in an instant Aarhus faded and I was trekking through the woods with the sea on one side on perfect cycling paths, as it is in cycling heaven.

It was so peaceful; had to remain focused on the path as it was easy to get distracted by the beauty of the surroundings. Stopped to take a breather at a vantage point overlooking the sea where I got talking to a local young lady, Helme (I think that was her name) who was having a rest. She was proud of her newly bought seriously expensive bike A$5.500 and the number of Aussies and Kiwis she worked with in the wind turbine industry.
I continued with my ride until I bumped into a fisherman and started exchanging fishing stories. He had 3 rods on the go; two for trout and one with lots of hooks on the line for small fishes (don’t know what they are called); he assures me that they are a delicacy in Denmark what we in Aussie would call undersized fish. He was living the dream, as was I.
Next was visit to the café, but they didn’t do chai. Bugger, so we improvised and made the next best thing an Americano tea (look it up in Google).

As I rolled along out of the forest into farmland,

the wind started picking up, pushing harder and harder against me. But who cares, I was loving it. It was not half as bad as my stage 4 ride, which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

Rolling into Horsens, I decided to surprise Ursula at the train station, without having any idea what train she was on. Within a few minutes of my arrival at the train station, I got a call from her. Not happy, as I had given her wrong address of our AirBnb accommodation in Horsens. The end result was, she wasted an hour walking around in a huge loop before getting to the right place with a help of a local. Just as well, as I had the wrong address as well. Whilst she walked for an hour pulling a suitcase, Henning, our host collected me from the station, bike and all in a car. Waiting at the house to greet me was his wife Birgit and Ursula. He, an ex policeman and she an ex headmistress; they have a lovely home and lovely accommodation for us. Shared an afternoon tea with them before heading to town for a dinner, which was very nice. Couldn’t have wished for a better end to the cycling tour of Denmark. Nothing went wrong for me today but sadly can’t say the same for Ursula, who wasted an hour in her day.
