I didn’t think it would get any better than the first stage of my Denmark tour; how wrong was I? Woke up to an irresistible day for cycling, clear blue sky, and warm with a gentle breeze. I was keen to get going to take advantage of the conditions. I took the route from Helsingor on very quiet roads following the coastline to Gilleleje. Got talking to Jacob on the way, who recognised that I was a long way from home when he saw my Aussie flag proudly fluttering at the rear of my bike on the top of my panniers. He accompanied me for approximately 15km, exchanging stories of our travels and life in our respective countries. On arriving at Gilleleje, the little town was starting to come to life as market stallholders were preparing the wares for sale. Tried a couple of cafes for a chai latte but no luck. From there I headed south through the forest and grazing farmland, mainly on gravel paths.
For long periods, I was the only rider until I came across a couple from London who guided me in the right direction, as I was off-course by then. Finally back on asphalt, I entered Hillerod riding past the magnificent Frederiksberg Castle, which we further explored later in the arvo.
It was a perfect day for taking photos, snapping away at all the lovely sites I came past. One of the photos shows an enormous bicycle sitting outside one of the shops at the Gilleleje marina, had to put my bike alongside and snap a picture just for fun.
Arriving at Hillerod, I joined Ursi at our Airbnb. A lovely apartment very centrally located. After Copenhagen, where we had a tiny little bedroom, minuscule bathroom and little kitchen at our disposal, this feels like a palace. We have access to the whole place, which includes large living room, separate dining room, good size kitchen and bathroom and of course a bedroom. First things first, well deserved shower to cool me down, sandwich for lunch washed down with cold water and a cup of tea and then off to explore the town. Ursi had already done the rounds and knew her way around. Started with the compulsory Chai Latte, then the castle, which was quite amazing. It was more like a museum as it was full from top to bottom with antique furniture, sculptures and paintings of all the kings and queens past and present.
Then a walk through the amazing gardens and grounds and around the little lake, which brought us back through the pedestrian area to our accommodation. A bit of chill time, then a simple tuna salad for dinner and now catching up with e-mails and news from Australia. It doesn’t get any better!
