A relaxed start to the morning as it was a short drive to Beziers; stopping there overnight as a base for getting to Marseille the next day to meet my sister. Decided to break up the journey to visit Carcassonne, cute little town in Southern France, famous for it’s medieval citadel. The approach to the town included a McDonalds, a KFC amongst other fast food chains, which is a sign of heavy tourist and/or local traffic coming through the place. In this case, it would be the tourists because the town itself is quite small and relies heavily on tourism. Got into the town, parked the car, made our way to the Tourist Information Centre to get the customary map and info on places of interest to visit. Armed with that, we were on our way to the fortress on top of the hill. The narrow road leading to it had lots of cafes, reminding us, it was time for our morning fix. Energised, we made our way to the top and enjoyed the next couple of hours walking around the medieval fortress.
We strolled in between the inner and outer walls and criss-crossed through the middle of the old fortress,
noticing the snow peaked mountains in the background.
The restaurants inside the fortress were busy doing the lunches; it was tempting but we were doing a fruit only lunch and we stuck to it.
On the way back to our car, the streets were pretty deserted for reasons unknown. We got a tad lost but eventually managed to find our car. Next up, was Beziers for an overnight stop. There was an imposing cathedral on top of a hill on the approach into town.
We made our way to our studio apartment, which was within walking distance of the town centre and places of interest. There is not a lot in this town for the tourist; we visited the cathedral but it was not open to the public. Walking along the nearby canal du midi, it was interesting to watch a boat go painstakingly slow through 4 locks all at different water levels.
Judging by the number of boats in the canal, some people must enjoy doing this; it’s not for us. The next day, after checking out we hung around the town for a little while before making our way to Marseille in time to meet and greet my sister at the airport.
This will be the last blog for a week or so, as we will be staying with my sister in her holiday home in Le Lavandou.
