Day 30 - Madrid to Segovia 95km (04-May-2018)

Early start to the day, my turn to get the bread roll and the croissants; lot of people and cars on the street as this was the first working day after the couple days of holidays. Ursi had the bags packed when I got back, she is good at that, Getting out of Madrid was a piece of cake; stopping at a petrol station on the way was a bit of drama, Ursi missed a turn so had a bit of detour; won’t go into any more detail than that, suffice to say there was a dialogue on who was at fault. Safely made it to Segovia; got to our AirBnb apartment which was within walking distance to the historical old town. Our host, Ganka was not at home, so we parked our car and made our way on foot and within a few minutes we were in front of the imposing viaduct,
which is the gateway to the historic old town. Got us a map and guidance from the tourist information centre, extremely helpful and useful. Walking through the old town, which was not as congested with tourists as some others, we were able to enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the main tourist attractions.

As usual, it was that time of the day; extra hot decaf for Ursi and an extra hot milk in a mug for me; I brought my own strong tea bags to dunk into). I find the tea bags served by the cafes are not strong enough for my taste. Tried calling the kids, neither of them around. Made our way back to Ganka’s place where the car was parked to put some more money into the parking meter and grabbed our home made bread roll sandwiches made by Ursi. We do this mainly to eat healthy, as we would more likely stuff ourselves with the wrong foods. After feeding the parking meter, we headed towards another part of the old town into the valley below giving a panoramic view of the old town above.
It’s there, that we met family form America; Don, wife, Susan and daughter Elizabeth, from Tampa, Florida. Elizabeth has been working as an English schoolteacher for the past 2 years in Madrid. Don is a passionate cyclist like me and kindly offered us to stay at his home. We kept going and continued to explore the surrounding areas of the old town and the town itself; eating lunch along the way. The parking meter gives a feeding respite between 2.30 and 4.30pm as it too has siesta time. We made it back, just in time to feed it again a tad before 4.30pm; by this time Ganka was home, and she greeted us very warmly like 2 lost friends. Ganka is a Romanian, teaches Russian and supplements that income by renting out the attic with a private bathroom through AirBnb. A lovely place, comfy bed and gave us a lovely healthy breakfast the next day. That evening, we went for another walk in a different part of Segovia with a view to grabbing a dinner. On the way, Ursi dropped into a ladies clothes shop and ended up buying 2 pants and a top. By the time we got out from there, it was 9.15pm and we had still not eaten; early for the Spaniards, very late for the Tanks. Had a lovely dinner at a restaurant recommended by the shop assistant in the clothes shop; nice meal. Asparagus and prawns for Ursi, Salad and a pork suckling (local delicacy) for me washed down by a complimentary bottle of wine. Ursi won’t admit, bit I think she was a tad smashed. Another stroll the through the old town to walk off the dinner and take a couple of night photos.

All in all a lovely day in beautiful Segovia.
