Day 29 - Madrid (03-May-2018)

It was a nervous end to the game last night but my beloved team progressed through to the final in spite of losing the game 4-2. They never do it easy. Today was our last day in Madrid; the city has exceeded our expectation. Had a leisurely start to the day, late breakfast, caught up with emails, surfed the net before making our way to the Prado. A short queue to get in, In addition to the normal paintings and sculptures, there was also an exhibition on Rueben’s paintings. Some were interesting but the others didn’t work for me. Ursi enjoyed it more so than I. Came across a few Arsenal supporters from London who were in town to support their team play against Atletico Madrid that night. We then zig-zagged across the major avenues to find an Ecco shoe shop hoping to pick up a bargain for Ursi, but had no luck finding the shop. Next up, we made our way to the park where the Egyptian Temple stands, an old stomping ground of our daughter, Jessie during her time in Madrid. Wikipedia states that "In 1960, due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the consequent threat posed by its reservoir to numerous monuments and archeological sites, UNESCO made an international call to save this rich historical legacy. As a sign of gratitude for the help provided by Spain in saving the Abu Simbel temples, the Egyptian state donated the temple of Debod to Spain in 1968. The temple was rebuilt in one of Madrid's parks, the Parque del Oeste, near the Royal Palace of Madrid, and opened to the public in 1972. The reassembled gateways have been placed in a different order than when originally erected.”

After spending a bit of time there, which also gave us an opportunity to take photos of the royal palace (the royal family does not reside there anymore; it’s only used for offical ceremonies);
we were debating whether to walk home, a long hike or take the metro; the hike was the outcome. It was a long hike as experienced and we were glad to get back to our apartment for a chill out time, which we both needed badly. Dinner was had across the road; very nice too. On reflection, we believe we covered everything we wanted to do and enjoyed Madrid immensely.
