Absolutely buggered after
walking 21.5km through the streets of Lisbon. Could be worse, our mate Bruce
from Melbourne ran the London Marathon today; well done mate. Started early
morning with good intentions to make it a fruit only day. Once again under a
heavy cloud cover; at least it didn’t rain. To start with, walked all the way
to Belem an area full of historic landmarks like the Tower of Belém, the sail-shaped
Discoveries Monument and the vast Gothic Jerónimos Monastery; all very
interesting, however the queues were so long that we decided to pass going in,
as we don’t do queues.
Took the tram back to Lisbon and accidentally came across a market “Time Out Market” which is worth visiting especially if you are a foodie. Nothing pretentious, but classy enough where one gets food (variety of Portuguese dishes) and drinks served in proper plates, glasses and cutlery. Not in the plastic, we get served in Sydney. Lovely atmosphere, the fruit and veg market in the adjacent hall was closed being a Sunday.
From there, we took the tram back to the city centre and walked home for a well-deserved sandwich (this was the end of our fruit only day, but we figured seeing we walked so much, we earned the right to have it. After a couple of hours rest, we took off again to explore more of Lisbon and went past the Indian restaurant from last night, so Sharad can have a Chai Tea. He was rapt, not only was it authentic Indian chai but also gratis. He is now best buddies with all the Indian waiters in that restaurant and I can foresee a return visit tomorrow. Happy days. On the way back, stopped by at the local Lidl to buy salad ingredients as we had decided to eat at home. Eat we did, a tuna salad. It’s only 8pm, we are well and truly pooped whilst Lisbon is starting to become alive. Put it down to a long day and old age.
